The Art of Calligraphy

The art of beautiful letterforms is as old as writing itself. Whether you are a beginner, need to freshen your skills, or want to learn more letter styles and designs, this class is for you. Students will learn both ancient and contemporary alphabets in basic strokes, upper and lower case letters, numerals, punctuation and spacing. The class will blend a centuries-old art form with each student's personal “hand” to develop a personal artistic style through the use of pens, markers, and brushes. Classes will include demonstrations and lots of hands-on time. Materials list mailed with confirmation.

Hand Building Techniques

Discover the unlimited possibilities of clay through slab construction and hand building techniques. Explore, alter, and embellish forms such as vases, wall pockets, and sculptural objects, working with an array of techniques that includes slab, pinch, and coil. Class will include demonstrations, critique and lots of hands-on time to help students develop and expand upon this exciting aspect of clay adventure. Glaze firing for this class will be done in the gas reduction kiln. Instructor Lily Stratton has a BA in 3-Dimensional Studio Art from Bob Jones University and exhibits in her West Greenville ceramics studio. Materials list mailed with confirmation. Garden Pots and Outdoor Pottery

Using nature as an inspiration, participants will use a combination of wheel throwing and hand building techniques to create aesthetic and functional vessels that complement our outdoor world. Explore texture and surface techniques, and create everything from garden pots to outdoor lanterns. This course will include one raku firing process and one gas firing. Basic Drawing to Build On
Jarrod Ulvi
Gain a hands-on appreciation for the basic elements of drawing, including line, shape, value, form, and composition. This is an introductory course that teaches drawing through classical methods. Students will work from still life compositions, while incorporating the elements of drawing. This is an excellent opportunity for people who have always wanted to draw, and for those looking to refresh their drawing skills. Instructor Jarrod Ulvi has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Winthrop University and brings a wealth of knowledge to basic drawing. Materials list mailed with confirmation.

Figure Drawing Studio and Critique
Glen Miller
Draw or paint the human form from a live model, working independently in a group of intermediate to advanced students. Students are free to choose the medium, drawing surface, and technique they prefer. Each session will begin with quick gestural studies and progress to one or more longer poses. This class format does not include formal instruction, but the final class in each session will include a critique led by Glen Miller. Miller is a long-time member of the Museum faculty who teaches at Converse College and exhibits in his Greenville gallery, Twelve Sixty-Six. Students are welcome to work in their medium of choice and should bring their own materials to class.

Acrylic Techniques to Build On

Develop acrylic painting techniques to use again and again. This class is a must for beginning and intermediate students looking to build their skills or for artists who normally work in other media and want to try something new. Participants will work from their choice of subject matter while learning techniques to layer colors, solve problems with composition and color, and add texture to paintings. Instructor Jane Todd Butcher is a Signature Member in the South Carolina Watermedia Society and has taught students at all levels.

Experimental Watermedia and Critique
Barbara St. Denis and Carrie Burns Brown
Develop an exciting array of innovative techniques and new materials while experimenting with watermedia. Explore ways to use color to create mood and learn to build texture using gesso, gels, skins, and found objects. The first four classes will be taught by Barbara St. Denis, a Member in Excellence of the South Carolina Watercolor Society and a Signature Member of the Natural Watercolor Society. The final class will be a critique led by artist and educator Carrie Burns Brown, a long-time member of the Museum’s faculty, frequent judge for juried exhibitions, and a Member of Distinction in watercolor societies across the country.

Oil Painting Techniques
Paul Flint
Study with artist Paul Flint, a founding member of the ArtBomb Co., while learning to combine the best of two techniques—wet on wet and glazing—to create oil paintings with depth and dimension. Beginning to advanced students will work from still life and live models to improve their mastery of working in the oil medium. Participants will begin each painting with the wet on wet technique, and finish it the next class with glazing. Color mixing will be a focus throughout the course.
