June's art activity offers ideas for everyone

Itsy-Bitsy Paper Punch Cards

Needed for all 3 designs: bright colored paper scraps, fine point black marker, any color paper scraps, 4mm moveable eyes, glue, 3 note cards in colors you like (or plain white paper, 4" x 6"), and a paper punch.

For all three designs, you need one 2" square and one 1-1/2" square. Glue the 1-1/2" paper in the center of the 2" paper. Glue both to the middle of a note card. Use the diagrams as a guide. Make all three or the one creature you like the best.

Butterfly

To make the butterfly’s wings, cut two pair of paper triangles. One pair should be slightly larger than the other. Cut one point off each large triangle. Cut a long thin triangle for the body using another color. Punch one paper circle for the head. Glue the largest wing pieces diagonally across the center of the 1-1/2" square. Glue the body triangle over the center of the large wing pieces, and the smaller triangles under the large wings. Punch circles out of bright colored paper. Glue them on the wing sections. Now glue the circle in place for the head and put on the eyes. You’re almost done. The only thing left to do is draw antennae at the top of the head.

Caterpillar

Punch out 9 circles in two different colors. For the caterpillar’s head position two circles of the same color side by side on the 1-1/2" square, then overlap the remaining circles to make the body. Glue the circles in place. Glue on two moveable eyes. Use the fine point marker to  draw detail on the face and the little legs along the length of the body.

Ladybug

Use a quarter as a pattern to cut out one red circle and one black circle. Trim the black circle into a quarter moon shape for the head.  Punch our 4 black circles for the body. Glue the red circle in the middle of the 1-1/2" square. Glue the black piece on top of the red circle.  Add 2 eyes. Using the fine point marker, draw antennae and tiny legs on both sides of the ladybug.
